What's Back to Basics Birthing All About?

Welcome to the Back to Basics Birthing online course.

I have spent many years teaching this information face to face and found there was so much more I wanted to share, but my time with couples is sometimes limited.

This online course is to help reach more women and their partners and then provide ongoing support through the private Facebook group.

I have created this online course for all learning types, so you can download the workbook and just read, or I have also included videos of PowerPoint slides in each module so you can listen and look at the slides as I take you through, or just listen to the audio.

So what is this course all about?

Over time women have forgotten that 'birth' is a natural and normal process as they have been bombarded by the clinical and medical side of pregnancy and birth.

We are subjected to negative conditioning in our minds about birth from a very early age, sometimes from our family members and other people's traumatic stories, movies, images, social media and TV shows.

There is also a lack of education and preparation before a woman gets pregnant, and some schools are still teaching outdated health education classes with graphic and inappropriate videos that instil fear and dread about childbirth.

Birth doesn't have to be that way.

Many women are not given the opportunity to have a natural birth – medical interventions and caesareans are quickly suggested rather than alternative methods to avoid caesarean.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that caesarean rates should be between 10% and 15% yet here in Australia we are way above that at 34% and rising.

Antenatal classes held at the maternity hospitals are primarily focused on the policies and procedures of the hospital, and what could go wrong and the drugs and interventions that are available. This is important to know, but women also need to know the risks and benefits of medical procedures and what alternatives there are.

Sometimes those hospital classes can be about you being a good patient, rather than your health care providers being patient.

It is time for women to take back their power as consumers!

This course is about educating you so you feel confident to ask all the right questions, to gain all the information you need to make an informed choice.

You are the ones paying for a service from your caregivers and therefore you need to make clear what you want for your birth, while at the same time acknowledging that birth is unpredictable so being prepared for any birth.

If you are seeking a normal, physiological birth (natural birth without drugs or interventions) and you have chosen an Obstetrician, then make it clear to the Obstetrician that you want to pay them to do nothing, unless it is a true medical emergency and not just for convenience or to speed things up.

This is an opportunity for me to provide all women (pregnant or those contemplating pregnancy) and couples with information and education about pregnancy, labour and birth.

We need to go back to basics.

Birth is about bringing a new person into the world and this should be a celebration and a calm, happy experience.

I will aim to free you from fear about the birth of your baby. You only get one chance to birth your baby the way you want to.You just need to let go and release all doubt and trust that your body knows what to do.

It is important for women and couples to remember that it is their birth – and also their baby’s birthright to come into the world as calmly and peacefully as possible.

My role as a Childbirth Educator and Birth Coach is to assist you to go into your birth experience feeling educated and believing in your body - that it can birth without doubt or fear.

Women who prepare themselves mentally, physically and emotionally for their birth are more likely to have a positive, calm birth experience no matter how their baby is born.

Childbirth is hard work - that is why it is called “labour.”

You do need to prepare your mind and your body for your birth.

Birth does have an effect on a woman’s mental state. If she feels that she has not been listened to or respected during labour and birth, then she will grieve that process and it may affect her postpartum experience.

This online course is to help prepare you and support you through your pregnancy leading up to your birth.

I will cover the mind, the body, the emotions and the energy you give out or are surrounding yourself with.

All of these need to be working in synergy together to be balanced, so that you are ready to birth.

Your baby knows when you are ready.

There is a lot of information in this course, so it is important that you work through at your won pace, and keep going over anything that you don't fully understand or ask me in the support group.

I want you to enjoy your pregnancy, and to really become mindful of the feelings you have and marvel at the child that you have growing inside you.

This is an incredible time, but birth will probably be the most challenging, yet the most rewarding experience you will ever face in your lifetime.

When you hold your newborn in your arms and you look into their eyes, you feel their skin against your skin and their smell fills your nostrils triggering the release of prolactin for bonding and breastfeeding, you understand just how amazing you are – the incredible woman that gave birth to new life.

Thank you for choosing my course and I look forward to sharing my knowledge, my passion for childbirth education and my belief in the human body with you and your partner.

All the very best,
